Here we begin with a basic look at some of the stats about the affen and carry on with more in depth info on the breed.

Breed group: Terrier

Weight: 7-8 pounds

Height: 10-15 inches

Overview

Affenpinscher originated in Germany during the 1600's where they were primarily used as vermin hunting dogs. It is not entirely sure how these dogs were developed, but it is believed that they are linked to breeds such as the Schnauzer and also the Brussels Griffon. Today, Affenpinschers are primarily companion dogs.

Temperament

Affenpinchers are different from other terrier breeds in the sense that they are not as independent. They are though very good at solving problems and - these dogs are also very playful dogs that are often up to mischief. The Affenpinchers are extremely intelligent dogs; they require a firm hand when it comes to training to prevent them from becoming dominant. Affenpinchers are always eager to go for a walk, are on an adventure. Affenpinchers love to travel, and will be fine in a motor vehicle. This breed does better living inside the house, and will not be well suited to extremely hot or cold temperatures outside.

Care

Advisably the Affenpinsher's coat needs to be plucked once in a while, and is usually done by professional groomers. The hair of the Affenpincher should not be clipped as this tends to ruin the coat of the dog. With this breed you will sometimes find that there are some hairs growing in the corners of their eyes which may lead to them being irritated. Try to remove these without waiting too long.

Training

Affenpinschers are very clever dogs that will perform well in challenging tasks. They are prone to becoming bored fairly quickly, and will not do well when their training regime is very dull. These dogs will learn very quickly, and it is important to train them firmly as they can also pick up on bad behaviours. The Affenpinscher can be fairly difficult to housebreak, and it is advised that they are crate trained. This breed will do well if the training sessions are full of fun for both the owner and the dog.

Health problems

In general, Affenpinchers are very healthy dogs - they do not have many health problems or hereditary concerns. Like many of the smaller dogs, Affenpinchers have a chance of getting slipped kneecap that can occur when dogs get older - this condition is however treatable. Affenpinchers are also prone to suffer from hip degeneration - this can be treated by a surgical procedure.

all round this breed isa fantastic one and has many great qualities ver other breeds that are similar, if you like the above then this may well be the one for you.
