Small or Sagging Breasts Can Be Enhanced With Breast Augmentations and Breast Lifts

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that enlarges the size and improves the shape of a woman's breast. Breast augmentation is helpful for a woman who feels her breasts are too small and desires to enhance her body contour. It is also helpful in restoring breast volume that is lost pregnancy and weight loss. Similarly, it can be utilized to balance asymmetric breasts or as a reconstructive technique following breast cancer surgery.

During breast augmentation, implants are inserted through an incision - usually made just above the breast crease, around the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple, or in the armpit - and placed into a "pocket" created by the surgeon behind the breast tissue or the chest muscle. Breast augmentation is requested to add volume to small or underdeveloped breasts, or to restore volume lost as a result of weight loss, childbirth, or aging.

Breast augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts are fully developed, but there are regulatory restrictions on the use of breast implants in women younger than 18. There is no scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer, autoimmune disease or any systemic illness, nor is there evidence that breast implants affect pregnancy or the ability to breast feed. In addition to the positive aesthetic outcomes of breast augmentation, data have shown that many patients enjoy substantial psychological benefits, including enhanced self-esteem.

It is helpful to review pictures of different breasts to determine the size and look that you desire. Bring the pictures in to review with your surgeon to determine if that look is attainable with your natural breast shape. In addition to reviewing the different types of implants she will also assist you in determining the size you choose by providing you with breast implant sizers. You should anticipate that your breasts will look and feel fuller, firmer, and perkier.

Breast Lift (Mastoplexy)

Over the years, factors such as gravity, pregnancy, nursing, and weight loss take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and begin to sag. A breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to restore a more youthful shape and position to sagging breasts. Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume breast implants can be inserted at the time of mastopexy to increase both their firmness and their size.

The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy women with realistic expectations about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts. Both your self confidence and appearance can be improved with mastopexy surgery.

The procedure tightens the breast tissue and removes some of the stretched skin to create an uplifted and shapely form. In addition, if your areola is large it can be designed to be proportional to the contoured breast and raised to a more desirable position. The length and location of the incisions will vary depending on the amount of lift required. Your surgeon will make every effort to limit the length of the scar and place it in the most inconspicuous location. Fortunately, the incisions can be easily covered by your bra, bathing suit or clothing.
