The Austin City Limits Music Festival happens annually in the later part of the year and is a three day concert with over 125 bands of all musical styles on 8 stages. This event has been known to attract over 65,000 visitors and bands from all over the globe. The Urban Music Festival started in 2006 and drew a crowd in excess of 9,750 to listen to some of the top Urban Music bands. Some of the bands of the Urban Music Fest have been Cameo, Boyz to Men, and the Sugar Hill Gang. The Fun Fun Fun Fest Is another annual music festival that started up in 2005 and has showcased a wide array of artists over two days on 4 stages. A few famous artists of the Fun Fun Fun Fest have been the Bad Brains, All and The Dead Milkmen.
How Austin, TX came to become the home for so many Austin bands is still puzzling but as the live band scene expanded through the years in Austin, the stigma that it was the place to get seen and make it to the big time started to draw in a plethora of gifted musicians from across the country. The quantity of Austin, TX bands far exceeds the amount of bars providing gigs so only the top bands end up getting the gigs thereby furthering the common perception that Austin bands tend to be the most talented in the nation. Many musicians that had come to Austin desiring to make it in the local scene headed back where they came from to face less rivals and found that being a big fish in a small pond was better and more productive than slugging it out with oodles of bands in one city for the few jobs there were in such a aggressive music market.
There are many world renowned musicians that hale from Austin, Texas including Robert Earl Keen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Asleep at the Wheel, Kelly Willis, Redd Volkaert and Eric Johnson to cite a few.
