Cufflinks used to be the domain of the man who wanted to don a tuxedo to go out for an evening. They were ever so slightly upper class and signified that you should be holding a champagne flute in one of your hands at an evening reception. This has changed, and in recent years it has now become a style necessity to wear a good quality shirt with an equally stunning pair of cufflinks.

If you have never bought or even used cufflinks before then the very best place you can start off is a good jewellery store. This way you will see what a cufflink is like to hold and you will also get a good feel for the kind of style that you want. While there is a vastly better selection online - with many online stores now opening purely for the sale of cufflinks - a first time user would be best placed to venture out into the high street and take a good look at what is generally available. Don't go to a cheap store if you can help it. More exclusive and better quality jewellers, such as independent retailers, will be able to offer the best advice and a more varied range.

If you are looking for more formal cufflinks, let the jeweller know this. They should then be able to direct you towards their selection that meets this requirement. Formal cufflinks can be very different to the casual variety, and you could make an awful mistake if you bought a decidedly casual pair for a formal meeting or engagement. There is a vast array of novelty cufflinks on the market for example, and if you went to a wedding wearing these it would definitely say something negative about your personal taste.

If, however, you want to buy a pair of casual cufflinks as a gift, then the selection is usually a lot bigger. Take care to choose cufflinks that match the personality of the person you are buying for. It may even be a possibility that you can buy cufflinks that match a certain occasion they are due to attend soon. Be careful though, because it is easy to buy cufflinks that do appear low garde or tacky. Spend time on choosing, so that you do not appear thoughtless or insensitive.

Finally, there is a key tip when it comes to buying cufflinks for an outfit that is a little more formal than others that you may have. One great way to pull off a good look with cufflinks is to coordinate them with whatever you are wearing. Your wedding band is perfectly suited to this, and a good gold or silver set of cufflinks really works when it comes to providing a dazzling look. You can also coordinate your cufflinks with your watch and even your tie. Mix and match with whatever you wear, and you should soon see why cufflinks are coming back into fashion once more, and are no longer the preserve of the upper class.
