Internet telephony is the science or technology of integrating telephone services into computer networks. It simply converts analog voice signals into digital signals, transmitting them and then converting them back again.
Traditional telephone service use telephone lines and circuit switches in order to communicate. Internet telephony removes the telephone company and uses computer networks in order to send voice signals.
When you send an email, the email is broken up into a series of data packets, each taking their own route to the destination mail server. Once there, the packets reassemble themselves into the full email message. The Internet telephony is a similar process, it also transmits using data packets, and analog voice signals that are digitized and sent in discreet packets to the destination, then they are reassembled and reverted back to analog signals.
The modulated voice can be treated and transferred over the Internet like other computer data. The originating computer prepares the data for transfer across the Internet and sends it using a protocol known as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Each data packet is tagged with information on where it fits into the conversation and the destination address before it is sent over the Internet. As the data packets arrive at the destination, which could be either a telephone or a computer, they are reassembled into data which the receiving machine can read.
If you use internet telephony, you can place calls free of telephone charges. The only requirement is that both users must have Internet telephony software. Charges usually apply when internet telephony is used to call a land-line or cell phone, however these charges are usually very low.
Internet telephony services offer important cost savings when compared to traditional telephone services. Some Internet telephony companies allow users to make computer-to-computer calls for free to other users of the software. The only associated cost would be the Internet service. For PC-to-Phone calling, Internet telephony companies generally charge a flat rate well below the costs for similar services using traditional phone service providers.
Another important advantage is that most Internet telephony providers offer a conference calling feature. This option usually comes as part of the service package, consequently giving it an advantage over traditional phone services.
A disadvantage of Internet telephony could be that just like cellular phones, Internet telephony also suffers from problems like dropped calls and audio distortion. The broadband connection plays a key role with this technology. It is important to take into consideration that older computers with slower processors and limited RAM may not support Internet telephony.
