The operating system is the most important program that runs on a computer. Computers must have an operating system to run other programs. The OS performs basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
An Operating System is the most essential component of a computer or any device that performs computing functions like mobile phones, PDAs, gaming consoles, e-book readers, and all the other smart devices. The computer operating system decides how the computer software and hardware interact with each other.
A part of the operating system is the graphic user interface (GUI) which lets the user use or command the application programs hosted on the operating system. There are different types of operating systems for computers available today.
Operating systems provide a software platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run. The application programs must be written to run on top of a particular operating system.
There are some requirements that a system needs to qualify as an OS:
.The system should perform multiple functions, not necessarily at the same time, to provide the most relevant output to the user as fast as possible.
.The system has to be interactive with the user. It must ask and provide with whatever is required at each step.
.The system effectively links the application software to the computer's hardware.
An OS is like an interpreter between the hardware and the software. The OS has to deliver the most relevant and precise data to the hardware from the software and the calculated output back to the software. This also means handling the version gaps between different applications or hardware.
Resource management is a very important task that the OS has to perform. This includes the resources of processor speeds, hardware memory, and disk space, among others. It should not let memory on any side to overlap another, because this will cause data loss.
Consistent application interface is also important, including multiple computers that possess the same OS. If you work on something on one computer, the OS needs to make sure that it will work on another computer with the same OS.
The OS needs to make the user interface, which is what you see on the screen, simple and straightforward. This includes a nice and practical interface. The effectiveness of the commands is also crucial
There are a few famous Operating Systems available in the market, but whichever you choose, make sure it is what you want and need it to be.
