Are you looking for a pesonal trainer? Here are some tips to help you know what to look for in a personal trainer:

Certification & continuing education

Don't just assume that every personal trainer working in a gym is certified. Ask them where the certification comes from. The National Academy of Sports Medicine, The American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Council on Exercise are some of the most sought after, most recognized certifications for personal trainers.

Personal Trainers and Athletic Trainers are two different certifications. Some trainers may be certified athletic trainers (National Athletic Trainer's Association), strength and conditioning coaches (CSCS) or exercise physiologists.

Related Experience: You should talk to the potential personal trainer and make sure that they have experience related to your own personal goals. If you are extremely overweight, have they successfully worked with others that are starting from the same place that you are? If you are a bodybuilder you don't want to work with someone that has never competed. If you have specific medical issues your trainer should have experience working with others with the same medical issues.

Pay Attention To ME!: A good personal trainer will do more listening than talking in the beginning. They should be asking you questions about your life styles, medical history, weight history, where you work, what you do at home, etc... During the training sessions they should not be joking around with other people, texting on their phone, or falling asleep. They should be 100% focused on you. If they are not, GET ANOTHER TRAINER RIGHT NOW!

Show Me The Proof: All good fitness professionals should have and keep up todate a portifolio of past clients. There should be photos and written testimonials. They should be able to provide before and after pictures of many different clients. Looking through this portifolio will give you an idea as to what type of clients the trainer normally works with. You will also get a decent idea of how successful the trainer has been in the past. Ask how you can speak to a few of these clients.

Final Word; Do your research. Don't just jump at the first trainer to greet you in the gym. Don't just accept the first personal trainer that the manager sets you up with. Ask questions. Ask for references. Interview at least a couple of trainers first before making your choice. Ask the trainer if you can have a trial session first to see what working with them is like.

Once you find the right personal trainer your life could change forever. Having the right personal trainer to push you to places you never thought you could reach will change your body and your mind in ways you never imagined.
