If you are planning to buy a diamond at some point you may wonder how you can tell the difference between a real and a fake. If you buy a diamond from an individual instead of a well-known jewelry store this question becomes even more important. Sometimes stones that look really great are fake through and through, but if you know what look out for you can avoid buying a fake. Here are a few tips to make sure you do not get ripped off.

First, you may want to consider using a diamond tester. A diamond tester is an electronic device that can be used to check diamonds to ensure that they are genuine. This will work on most diamonds. If you don't have access to a diamond tester, then you may be able to simply weigh the stone. Fake diamonds, also known as cubic zirconias, are heavier than real diamonds by about fifty percent. This is not always the easiest way to tell a difference.

You can also test a diamond by putting it under an ultra violet light, or a black light. The color that is projected from the diamond should be blue, and if it is not then you can bet that the diamond is fake. This cannot always be relied on, because some diamonds that are of very high quality will not project any color. That means that you cannot use this test as a stand alone test. It should be performed in conjunction with other tests.

Perhaps one of the simplest tests you can do is a fog test. You should begin by cleaning the stone to ensure it's free from oil and other dirt. Breathe on your diamond and often this will create a foggy look on your diamond. If your stone is in fact real you will see the fog disappear fast. If you notice the fog is staying this indicates a fake stone. This is something that anyone can do and is simple.

These are just a few ways to test the authenticity of your stone. If for any reason you feel your stone is not real you can always get in touch with a professional jeweler. There are certain magnifications that they can use to ensure the diamond is real or fake. You should ensure you never buy a stone unless you know for sure that it's real as this can lead to you just throwing out your money, which can be very upsetting to most people.
