This season, women's jackets are more stylish (and daring!) than ever before - the hottest runway styles from Burberry and Celine feature bright pops of color and a cheery palette of tangerine, cherry-red, and juicy peach. While the most fashionable and classic jacket for fall/winter 2011/12 is probably a fitted scarlet "car coat" with large, shiny black buttons, women should opt for the shade that is the most flattering to their skin tone. Women with pale skin will look lovely in true red - women with warmer skin tones will glow in peach or tangerine designs. To get the look, accessorize your bright winter jacket with a contrasting scarf, hat and gloves. Then, enjoy a bit of uplifting color that will make even the darkest winter days seem brighter.

To style your hair and makeup for this bold look, add a few sunny highlights to your hair, and then give yourself a sun-kissed glow with a touch of bronzer along the bridge of the nose, the forehead, the temples, and the cheekbones. Dark bronzer won't look good on very pale skin, so choose a shade that blends with your own skin tone. Pale gold bronzer looks great on ivory skin, and terracotta bronzer suits darker skin. After bronzer, add a little sunny charm to lips and eyes with a sheer melon lip gloss and a touch of gold metallic eye shadow near the top lash line. Finish the look with a coat of black mascara.

If you're not into bright colors, you won't be left "out in the cold" this season, because designers also offer a range of refined and subtle menswear-inspired winter jackets. These designs are made to reflect the simple and functional lines of traditional men's overcoats, and they also tap into one of the hottest overall trends in fashion.androgyny. If you love the sleek and tailored look of menswear, and you enjoy borrowing a little style from the guys, opt for a lovely cashmere winter jacket in camel, charcoal-gray, or chocolate brown.

Highland plaids and bold checked coats are fun to wear, and both looks capture the bonny spirit of Scotland - if you're of Scottish heritage, you may particularly enjoy adopting this hot new trend in women's winter jackets. To play with the look, designers are offering up red-and-black or purple-and-black checked coats (or traditional tartans in forest green or scarlet) with funnel collars and asymmetrical buttons. Plaid and tartan coats are usually thick and warm, and they offer color that is more classic and traditional. For those who eschew hot orange and tropical coral, the tones found in tartan and plaid coats may feel easier to wear. To make the most of this trend, pair your jacket with tapered trousers, shiny high boots with laces, and a newsboy cap. Don't be afraid to wear color under your plaid coat - wearing multiple tones is another popular fashion choice for winter, and you'll see it everywhere in women's magazines, and out on the streets.

As you can see, there are so many ways to express your style through outerwear this winter. Since you wear your coat so often, it's an important investment piece that should be chosen with the utmost care. Look for the trend that evokes your personal style and spirit, and then try on different jacket designs to find the ideal shade and cut. Once you've made your decision, you can stay warm - and fashionable - all winter long.
