The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States and was initially released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. This awe inspiring coin is only availble in the one-troy ounce size and has a face value of one dollar. The American Silver Eagle is warranted by the United States government to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% genuine silver and it's content, weight, and purity are certified by the United States Mint as well. In addition to the bullion form, the United States Mint makes a proof version and an uncirculated style for coin collectors as well. The American Silver Eagle has been manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.
The coin's obverse design was drawn from the "Walking Liberty" design which was created by Adolph A. Weinman and had initially been applied on the United States Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.This design was cherished by the public and is by far one of the most welcomed designs of any coinage ever created by the United States which is why it was brought back to existence for the American Silver Eagle decades later. Markd with the year of minting, the declaration "Liberty", and the saying "In God We Trust" on the face section, this coin reminds us of what America truly stands for.
The reverse pattern depicts an eagle behind a shield, it's sharp talon bearing an olive limb, and it's left embracing arrows which mirrors the Great Seal of the United States. This feature of the coin also carries thirteen five pointed stars located over the eagle's head to signify the thirteen primary colonies and is inscribed with the phrases "United States Of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver ~ One Dollar," and on the banner that the eagle clutches in it's beak, "E Pluribus Unum". The mint mark, if applicable, can be found on the reverse as well. This splendid figure was designed by John Mercanti.
The initial American Silver Eagle coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986. American Silver Eagle bullion coins do not possess mintmarks and were minted from 1986 to 1998 in San Francisco. Then, from 1999 to 2000, the coins were minted at Philadelphia and West Point. Ever since 2001, they have been minted at West Point only. From 1986 to 1992, proof American Silver Eagle coins were minted at San Francisco and yield the "S" mintmark. From 1993 to 2000, the proof coins were minted at Philadelphia and they yield the "P" mintmark. After 2001 to 2008, they were minted at West Point and the coins display a "W" mintmark.
Proof editions were not minted in 2009 but began once more in 2010, and were minted at West Point yielding the "W" mintmark. From 2006 to 2008, the United States Mint maded a collectible uncirculated American Silver Eagle coin fabricated at West Point and they carry the "W" mintmark. The coins were struck on specifically burnished blanks and are occasionally referred to as "W Uncirculated" or "Burnished Uncirculated." No reflective uncirculated American Silver Eagle coins have been minted ever since 2008.
