They say that 65 is the new 40, however, unless you fancy retiring at 90 (which I suppose must be the new 65) you probably should start planning ahead a little bit.

Your retirement is something that you have to wait a long time for, so once it arrives you will probably be very keen to start making the most of it. So. Do you want to retire in style? What are your plans and dreams?

The first step is to think about what you want to do with your retirement. Golf is always popular, and world travel is great too. Perhaps you just want to chill out and relax, or try some new hobbies.

Basically, unless your retirement plan involves struggling to make ends meet, you had better start working towards it.

Here's how to start:

Think ahead, once you know what you want to do with your retirement, figure out how much money you will need to fund it, how long you expect it to last and how much time you actually have to save up. Then you can see what you need to save each month.

It's never too early to start saving and come to think of it, it's never too late either. Remember, you will (hopefully) be retired for a long time, so you're going to need plenty of money behind you if you don't want to run out.

Learn to invest. Inflation = your money being worth less. You want your money to grow, otherwise your savings will suffer. Start learning to invest now so that you can be in control of your financial well being.

Summary:

Retirement is referred to as the golden years for a good reason. It is the well earned time in your life when you can finally slow down and start spending your time however you want to. Unfortunately many people fail to plan and don't get the most out of their retirement.

So if you want to get the most out of your retirement, now is the time to start planning for your future. Don't fall into the trap of leaving your plans for later and never getting round to it.
