Some time ago I was in college. While taking my normal classes such as math and biology I found myself also required to take a philosophy class. At the time I had no idea what philosophy was or if I'd even like it. But like so many other things in life when required to do it, I do. So I found myself sitting in front of this teacher who would go off on tangents about obscure parts of philosophy.
You've seen those teachers. (I love them. In fifth grade I had one who it was so easy to distract we'd go from math to the history of Egypt in a second. I think I learned more in that class than any other one I've ever been in.) These unconventional teachers move from one thing to another along with their students' interest or their own interest.
This philosophy teacher was like that.
I was enthralled.
I hung on every word jumping in and asking questions about a hundred different things. The teacher loved it. We'd have entire discussions there in class without another soul participating. This method of talking through things was natural to me. Without knowing it I'd been talking philosophically my entire life. Instead of spreading rumors or talking politics my family had conversations about math, science, and how things worked.
Now I know you're wondering why I've told you all this. I'm getting to the point.
As I went through this class I aced every test. Before long the other students were dropping out like flies. Not a single one could get higher than a C. They asked me to help them study but it didn't seem to help (I didn't really study for this class). Then our midterm came around.
Because of the bad grades of everyone else the teacher said if everyone did badly he'd grade on a curve. Instantly I was swarmed. Everyone still left kept asking me to tank the test, after all it wouldn't hurt me to miss a few. ..
I struggled with this for some time. I'd done my best to help these people and now they were begging me to fail.
I have faced this same situation on many other occasions. When you start to succeed, start to change things within your life, start to make something of yourself people will invariably try to stop you. Most of the world is content as they are. That isn't to say that they won't complain, that they actually LIKE where they are, but the pain of their situation isn't enough for them to change and so they don't want you to change either.
They will tell you that you can't do it, swear that you will fail and try to beat you down to their level.
Think of it like crabs. When a crab is caught they don't bother putting it in a cage they just place it in a bucket with another crab. The bucket doesn't have to be that tall either for every time one of the crabs reaches up and tries to crawl out the other crabs grab hold and pull it back into the bucket preventing the escape of all.
People aren't any different, the key is to not let them get their claws locked into you. You can spend the rest of your life wondering if you could have taken that next step and succeeded, or you can take it now, bat off the claws, and climb your way out of the confines of the bucket.
Failure.
Success.
The decision is up to you.
