10 Tips For Traveling With Your Dog

Your dog is a member of your family and it is only natural that you would want to bring him along when you go on a vacation. More and more families are including that four legged family member each year on their vacation trips. If you are considering traveling with your dog here are 10 tips that will make that trip easier and more fun for both you and your dog.
1. Be sure to have a health check for your dog before leaving on any trip and make sure that all his vaccinations are up to date and make sure you pack the certificates and bring them with you.
2. Make sure your dog is wearing proper identification at all times. This should include either your cell phone number or the number of a relative or friend who will know how and where to reach you at all times, should your dog get lost en route.
3. Make sure if you are traveling by car that you keep your dog crated while the car is moving. This provides protection for both you and your dog and makes travel more enjoyable for all of you. The crate should be well ventilated and large enough for the dog to stand, lie down and turn around.
4. Bring some of your dogs regular food and water along. Changes in diet or water could give your dog diarrhea making the trip unpleasant for him and for you.
5. Make sure you have a sturdy leash and collar and use them whenever your dog is outside. If your dog is not leash trained this should be done before starting your vacation.
6. During the trip stop frequently and give your dog time to relieve himself and get some exercise. This is especially important if you are traveling for several days or you will be spending time in a small hotel room where his opportunities to exercise will be somewhat limited.
7. No matter where you are always clean up after your dog.
8. Plan your accommodations ahead. If you are planning on staying in a motel make sure that your pet will be welcome and find out the rules in advance of making your reservation. Once you get to the hotel/motel ask where you may walk your dog.
9. When planning your vacation check and see if there are dog sitting facilities available so you and your family might enjoy a little sightseeing or a meal with out your dog being present.
10. Be sure to include some of his favorite toys, his food and water dish and his grooming supplies when packing. These familiar things will help your dog feel more comfortable when traveling.
You might want to do a little research on your destination to find a couple of places where you can take your dog to get some real exercise. Even jogging with him will help him stay fit and tire him out so he is calmer when in the close quarters of a motel room or traveling in the car. By bringing the right things for your dog, your whole family can have a fun and relaxing vacation together.
