Sore throats can be miserable and finding effective ways on how to soothe a sore throat can make a crummy day much better. In one cup of warm water, dissolve a teaspoon of salt and gargle with this solution. Salt is extremely beneficial and is an excellent way to relieve a sore throat. Gargling can be done as often as needed, however, the solution should not be swallowed.

Another remedy on how to soothe a sore throat is the use of honey and lemon. Adding honey to tea helps to soothe irritated tissues, and lemon is helpful in breaking up mucous. Drinking water and other fluids is a good way to keep the throat moist and helps reduce the pain of a sore throat. Eating cold foods is another remedy as it numbs the mouth and throat for a time, easing the pain. Some people prefer warm foods for easing the pain of a sore throat. Warm foods can help much the same way as cold foods. Avoiding hard or rough foods is also a smart idea, as these types of foods can rub and chafe an already sore throat. Eating softer foods will be easier on a sore throat.

Using pain medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen will ease the pain of a sore throat. How to soothe a sore throat can also be answered by sucking on throat lozenges or throat sprays made especially for the treatment of sore throats.

Many times the cause of a sore throat can be because the air is too dry. Dry air is particularly common in the winter when there is less humidity in the air. The use of a humidifier is advantageous as it will help keep the throat moist, especially at night when one breathes through the mouth. A small humidifier in the bedroom or whole house humidifier can be used. Another way to provide moisture in the air is to boil water; as the steam helps to moisturize the air.

Knowing the extent of the sore throat, and what caused it, will help in knowing what steps need to be taken to cure it. Some sore throats are infectious and can only be cured with medical intervention.
