We all want our dogs to remain safe. Owners may unknowingly have a range of health hazards around their home. Your dog may quickly get into something he's not supposed to if you're not paying close attention. If you're interested in learning about common household hazards for dogs, then make sure that you continue reading.

Dogs are omnivores which means that they'll eat many different things from plants to animals. There are certain food items that you should never leave lying around your home because they're very toxic to dogs. Chocolate will affect your dog's heart and is very harmful.

Dogs can easily die if they ingest too much chocolate. Owners should also avoid letting their dogs consume raw onions since they're very toxic too. Your canine friend should also be kept away from raisins.

Wires will also present a potential hazard for your dog. Unless you toss out all of your electronics and such, you won't be able to remove wires entirely from your home. Keep wires out of the way as much as possible though to make sure that your dog doesn't start chewing on them and start a fire or even worse electrocute himself.

It's also a good idea to keep an eye on small objects lying around the home since they can pose another hazard. They can easily be ingested and choked on. This is commonly a problem when there are little children in the home with their small toys. You wouldn't like the results if your dog decides to chew on one of these, so try to avoid letting it happen.

The plastic bags that you bring home from the grocery store should be stored away in a safe place. You don't want to let your dog play with them. Dogs can easily suffocate on plastic bags if they get them stuck over their head. The bags can also cause choking if your dog tries to swallow them.

Virtually every house has certain standard chemicals in them, and they can be very dangerous to pets. Bleach and other chemicals need to be kept somewhere the dog can't get to. If you choose to keep your chemicals in a low-lying cabinet, you should put locks on them to keep your dog out. Chemicals like antifreeze can also be fatal very quickly if your dog ingests it, so you need to be very careful that you don't spill any on your driveway when filling your car up.

Be very careful when using pesticides around your home too. Dogs can ingest pesticides accidentally if they're used incorrectly. Rat traps can also cause injury to your dog if you use them nonchalantly. Do whatever you can to avoid letting your dog's curiosity get the best of him.
