Approximately 6 billion people populates the Earth and it is still counting as you breathe. The same population creates all types of waste materials – both biodegradable and non-biodegradable. In the United States alone, a staggering 1,600 pounds or 726 kilograms of garbage is being produced according to the Environmental Protection Agency. An average of 2 kilograms per day of waste products is being produced by every household in the America. Though Americans have been tagged as the number one producers of garbage in the world, Mexican households produced 30 percent more garbage than Uncle Sam's children.
This situation alone makes you wonder what will be left for the next generation – where your future children will be members of. Eight years ago, government representatives from all over the world reaffirmed the importance of an effective waste management during the World Summit on Sustainable Development, focusing attention on recycling and reusing to minimize waste products.
You may say: "Hey, I was browsing for wedding favors. I cannot do anything about that." What I mentioned above is the big picture which evolved from smaller parts. We are the smaller parts of that picture. If you love the person you are going to marry (which I know you do) and eventually, have children with him/her, taking into consideration the waste that you make is one measure of a person's attitude towards responsibility.
"How can one's wedding possibly have something to do with this?" We all produce wastes, regardless of where we are. What hurts the Earth is the non-biodegradable that is being produced by many industrial companies. Of course, you cannot control that, but you can control what you do. There are environment-friendly wedding favors which will look great not just on your guests but also on you. Take for example the wedding fans. If you are planning to have a beach-themed wedding, this is one great wedding favor that has all the desirable characteristics wedding favors have – elegant, simple and environment-friendly. Wouldn't it make you feel better to make a difference in your own way, in your own space of this getting-poisoned-by-the-minute Earth? It is great to have a clean environment! One great religious person said: "To live a pure unselfish life, one must not count as one's own in the midst of abundance." You're not selfish, are you?
