It is a well known fact that couples can have an argument while driving. According to surveys, one of the main causes for this is when the woman (passenger) crticizes the man (driver) for not stopping to ask someone for directions when they are not sure where they are going. After the installation of an auto GPS device in your car, this situation will be avoided - now there will be no reason to criticize anyone for continuing to drive around when they are effectively lost, and there will be no more need to ask anyone for directions.

Having said that, there may be some men that do not feel comfortable with an auto GPS device, because with many models the voice instructions comes in the form of a softly spoken female, and may remind them too much of listening to to their spouses advice while driving.

The types of auto GPS device available in today's market basiacally fall into 3 categories; firstly the type that is built into the vehicle dashboard during manufacture at the factory, secondly the type that is fixed to a solid retro-fitted bracket that renders it difficult to change it from one vehicle to another, and thirdly the type that is truly portable and easily transferable for use in any vehicle you may be in at the time.

With so many different makes and models there is a great variety of devices that offer widely ranging performance chacteristics and the accuracy of the information that the device provides can vary also.

Preparation required for using an auto GPS device.

Many people think that you only need to fit the auto GPS device in the car, turn it on, and that it will instantly start to give you directions. This is clearly not the case - you must first introduce your location and your intended destination before will be able to help you. Also when you purchase an auto GPS device, the installed maps will be relatively basic and may not include the area of intended travel. You can be sure that the manufacturer will have a website from where you can buy and download more maps to ensure that you will be able to get to where you want to go. In many cases these can be downloaded directly to the device.

The GPS system (Global Positioning System) operates via satellites that are orbiting around the earth. There are between 24 and 32 satellites orbiting the earth at any one time. Obviously not all of these are accesible at any one time. For the device to work at all, it needs to be able to receive data from a minimum of 4 satellites. The number of satellites that the device will make contact with will vary depending on it's position and the orbit of the satellites. This will usually average between 8 and 12 satellites, and the greater the number, the more accurate the information that you receive from your auto GPS device will be.

The GPS system is operated and maintained by the US government, and was originally developed for military purposes. It is a good example of how modern technology can be of great use to the civilian population around the world, despite it's military origins.

The way in which the auto GPS device communicates with you also vary depending on make and model. One may say , for example "in 300 feet, turn left", whereas another might actually tell you the name of the street when you get there. However the auto GPS device conveys the information to you, it will be accurate and reliable, whereas suggestions from whoever may be sat in the passenger seat will not!
