Try to tackle stains as quickly as possible as they can be harder to remove once they have dried on. You can use some professional spot cleaners on rugs but make sure you test the product on a small area first to make sure it does not damage the fibres. Take care not to get the rug too wet as it can take a long time to dry and this can cause the fibres to break down and also encourage moulds and mildew to form. If the carpet does get wet then it is a good idea to hang it up outside on a nice day to help it dry off.
UV light can fade colours on rugs over time so swap rugs and move them around so that they are not exposed to direct sunlight constantly. You could also draw the blinds/shades over a little to protect the rugs and other furnishings on very bright days.
