If you are sick and bored of your old wood windows and you are thinking of replacing them, vinyl replacements are a perfect way to upgrade. The whole process begins with your hiring two to three contractors that can give you a rough estimate on the plan and the overall cost of the work that needs to be done. After this first appointment, you wonder: "Is there are cheaper way to have this done or does it really have to cost this much?" As silly as it may seem, hiring someone to do this job for you can be quite damaging. Yes, you get to sit and relax while the work gets done, but in the end your pocket will feel lighter, what with all the money you have to cash out.
The thing is, you knew what to do then you can get rid of overpriced services and have your windows replaced in the most affordable way possible. If you know exactly what to look for, you can easily shop for a window replacement yourself. You can take the necessary measurements needed for ordering fabrics and whatnot, you can remove the existing one and then replace it with the new ones you have just picked out by yourself. If you knew what to do and can do it properly, you can easily save yourself some money by eliminating the strong of people that you are supposed to go through and hire. It will probably take you a longer time to accomplish this, but in the end you will have saved so much money and earn a little pat on the back for a job well done.
Taking precise measurements is the most important thing in all of these because if you get a window that is too small for the frame that you have, you will need to improvise and this can be really painful. You can probably succeed with it, good job; but it is most likely that you will encounter more problems with it. Similarly, if you order a window that is too big for the frame that you are working with, you will have no choice but to order another one, unless you find a place that will allow you to replace what you already have. To save yourself time and effort, therefore, you need to measure quite carefully.
Always get the dimensions as width x height. When measuring the width, you have to get the tape measure and pull it from the top right corner, all the way to the top left corner; making sure to take into consideration, the 1 ½ " pocket where the windows frame slides in. Make sure to measure up to the 16th of an inch. After this, you have to do the same thing this time at about a midway point, making sure to measure right above where the window locks and finally, you need to raise the bottom sash to get the equivalent measurement at the bottom; consider to go outside if you cannot raise the window for some reason. All three measurements obtained should be same, if it is not, then you will have to get the smallest value and then subtract about ¼ from it to get the real measurement of the window that you will use.
The height is a little trickier than the width. You measure from the top right to the bottom right corners of the window. Like in the width measurement, you need to do this again in the middle and then on the left and after obtaining all three measurements, you get the smallest of the three values and subtract 3/16" from it to get your final measurement.
If you can follow these instructions efficiently, you do not have to worry about having a window that does not fit.
