Crown River cruises is based in London, England and operates tourist passenger boats on the Thames. Built in 2001 Sarpedon is one of the most up to date tourist passenger boats operating on the Thames in London. The Sarpedon has a passenger seating capacity of 400 with 250 seats in the lower saloon and 150 seats on the upper deck. The upper deck seating needed to be replaced and the search for the correct seating configuration resulted in the selection of aluminium seating.
Following a comprehensive global search for the right aluminium seat manufacturer a highly experience Australian aluminium seat manufacturer was chosen to design and supply the new seating for the upper deck on the Sarpedon.
Aluminium seats provided the ideal solution for the upper deck section of the Sarpedon primarily for two specific reasons. As a passenger boat on a salt-water river the corrosion effect is of real concern and a low cost solution was needed. Secondly with thousands of passengers every year in all weather situations comfort and maintenance was important.
The Sarpedon plies its course up and down the Thames every day taking visitors to London to the famous sites of the city. The passengers on the Sarpedon view The Houses of Parliament, Greater London County Hall, The London Eye known as the Millenium Wheel, Old Scotland Yard, South Bank Centre Royal Festival Hall, Cleopatra's Needle, Savoy Hotel, Queen Elizabeth Hall Purcell Room, Museum of the Moving Image and the National Film Theatre, Hayward Gallery, Royal National Theatre, Somerset House and Coin Street Development. So each cruise is comprehensive and the visitors on the Sarpedon need comfortable and secure seating.
Specific construction and design issues that were solved relating to the project included the vast distance between supply and end user from Sydney to London, the seating is in an outdoor area in constant contact with salt water, the seats will be used by thousands of people, the fixing of the seats to the deck was difficult due to the location of the fuel tanks on the boat. The fuel tanks are located directly under the upper deck flooring and hence standard fixing was not an option. And lastly the seats needed to be shipped from Sydney to London in a cost effective manner. Aluminium seating was the preferred option over all other material options like timber seating and plastic seating and steel seating. Aluminium seats are lightweight and very strong requiring little ongoing maintenance and cleaning
The solution was to design and manufacture aluminium plain bench seats at custom lengths using modern CAD systems. During the design phase sample seats were air freighted to London for testing and approval. Final seating was delivered via sea freight on a just in time system ensuring seats were arriving and being installed in a staged process. Today tens of thousands of visitors from around the world are enjoying the sights and sounds of the Thames thanks to aluminium seats from Sydney, Australia.
