Bihar lies in the eastern part of India. It is the twelfth largest state in terms of geographical size having 98,940 square kilometers and third largest in terms of population. It lies in the mid-way between West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. It is confined to Nepal and Jharkhand around it. Patna is the capital city. The official languages are Hindi and Urdu, while the natives speak Angika, Bhojpuri Magadhi, and other native languages. Ancient Bihar was center of culture, knowledge and learning. Mythology says that Goddess Sita was the princess of Bihar and it is also said that Saint Valmiki also hailed from this rich state. Later, prince Gautham attained enlightenment and became Buddha, at the present Bodh- Gaya. Many primeval kingdoms, such as Magadha, Mauryan and Licchavis began their dynasties here. The fairs and festivals here are known here.

Tourism in Bihar is affluent as there are many places of learning and many rulers who established their empire here. It is a unique balance of culture and civilization. The capital city has exquisite architectural places to visit. Besides, the Har Mandir is an important pilgrimage site to the Sikhs next to the Golden Temple, Amritsar. Nalanda is a great tourist destination in Bihar. Nalanda University was epitome of learning in the earlier times. The architectural remains indicate to us as it is a stately structure with lofty walls and a massive gate. There are many other attractions here. Bodhgaya is rightly famous for the Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. Another picturesque is the city Vaishali, as it is walled by mango, banana and other grooves. It is also honoured as it finds its mention in the Ramayana. The other attractions of Bihar are the Grand Trunk Road across North India.

Bihar is famous with its majestic monuments, famous pilgrimage sites and scenic beauty. The festivals and tradition here is steeped in an account. The famous festival being, the Chatth Puja which is held twice a year and the Koshi Mahotsav and the Rajgir Mahotsav are the others which have created an impact with the flowery colours of tradition. Bihar tourism Development Corporation has taken many initiatives to show the potentiality of many places in Bihar. It is the place of the old excavations.

From exotic wildlife reserves to historical monuments, Bihar harbors all. Some of the most revered pilgrimages of India are also located in Bihar. The spiritual grandeur of the state unfolds in the form of many temples, mosques and monasteries. It is blessed with monsoon climate, anytime between April to September is considered ideal. The means to travel is safer and idealistic by air and road.
