Yelagiri is a famous hill station located in the Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated off the Vaniyanbaddi- Tirupattur road. The Yelagiri village is surrounded by the most beautiful orchards, rose gardens and vast green valleys. The village has recently been developed as a tourist spot particularly for adventurous tourists who can enjoy paragliding and rock climbing. The drive to Yelagiri is also beautiful and immensely enjoyable. As a small village Yelagiri boasts of fourteen hamlets and various temples spread over some of the most beautiful hills. Located at a height of thousand and forty eight meters above sea level, it is very popular with trekkers. The highest point in Yelagiri the Swamimalai hill and trekkers can enjoy a breath taking view from the summit. Smaller peaks like Javadi and Palamati hills also provide great treks through thick reserved forests.

Yelagiri is perfect for a two day weekend getaway and provides for excellent activities which can be easily enjoyed over a small weekend. The Punganoor artificial lake is a very popular destination. The lake is also surrounded by a beautiful park. It is very close to the central towns so most tourists prefer to walk to the lake and then enjoy a boat ride or simply walk around the garden. Visitors aren't allowed to picnic in the premises and a small fee must be paid for entrance and rides. Trekking lovers also like the longer trek to Swamimalai which is the highest peak in the hills. It is however an easy trek along a muddy path which begins from the lake.

It is about three kilometers long and offers scenic and picturesque view all along the trek. A short distance away is the Murugan Koil which makes for another beautiful and scenic trek. The Murugan temple is also a place worth visiting at the Murugan Koil. On the way up to the hills one can also pay a visit to the Telescope House from where the entire town can be viewed. However from the top of the hills a similar view can be seen even with naked eyes. People who visit in may and June can also enjoy the summer festival which showcases local culture and heritage. It is a huge government sponsored event with music, shows and cultural programs. The Jalagamparai waterfalls which are at a distance of thirty kilometers from Yelagiri is worth a visit as it makes for a good trek and a great picnic spot.

Yelagiri can be reached by road from Bangalore. The Salem airport is the closest airport and a taxi can be hired to go to the hills. Trains can be taken from Bangalore, Chennai or Coimbatore.
